The coat of arms was originally approved for the 40th Armored Quartermaster Battalion on 8 February 1956. It was redesignated for the 40th Quartermaster Battalion on 23 March 1961. It was redesignated for the 540th Support Battalion and amended to correct the spelling of the motto on 5 July 1968. The insignia was redesignated for the 540th Maintenance Battalion on 24 April 1975. It was redesignated for the 540th Support Battalion on 18 May 1987.
