Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure (Korean service ribbon Blue), a triple mount buff fimbriated Or and in base a Korean gateway of the last.  Attached below the shield is a Gold scroll inscribed SEMPER UBIQUE SERVIENS in Black letters.

Symbolism
Buff is the color of the Quartermaster Corps and represents the original service of the organization.  The triple mount and the Korean service ribbon blue symbolize combat service in Korea.  The golden Korean gateway alludes to the Korean Presidential Unit Citation awarded the organization.  The motto translates to Always and Everywhere Serving.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 40th Armored Quartermaster Battalion on 8 February 1956.  It was redesignated for the 40th Quartermaster Battalion on 23 March 1961.  It was redesignated for the 540th Support Battalion and amended to correct the spelling of the motto on 5 July 1968.  The insignia was redesignated for the 540th Maintenance Battalion on 24 April 1975.  It was redesignated for the 540th Support Battalion with the description amended on 18 May 1987.

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the California Army National Guard:  On a wreath of the colors Or and Azure (Korean service ribbon Blue), the setting sun behind a grizzly bear passant on a grassy field all Proper.
